We chose Dexter cattle for our farm for several reasons.  Their small size is a plus, the cows get up to between 800-900 lbs and the bulls or steers average 900-1000 lbs.  But it's their gentle, friendly disposition that set them apart from other breeds.  They originated in Ireland and are typically listed as a dual purpose breed, for milk and beef.

The cows are exceptionally good mothers, hiding their calves almost from birth if there is any cover for them to hide. They will produce enough milk to feed 2–3 calves, and often will willingly nurse calves from other cows. They are known for easy calving. This trait, along with the small size of the calf, has produced a small but growing market in the United States.

Dexters produce a rich milk, relatively high in butterfat (4%) and the quality of the milk overall is similar to that of the Jersey. Some claim the milk is more naturally homogenized than other milk due to the smaller fat globules. Dexters can reasonably be expected to produce 2 to 2.5 gallons per day.

Beef Dexters in the US are expected to mature in 18 months and result in small cuts of high quality lean meat, graded US Choice, with little waste. The average dress out is 50 to 70 percent. The beef produced by Dexters is well marbled and tends to be darker.

We are excited here at Good Steward Cattle Company to introduce everyone to our newest arrivals, Katrina and Cellie!  They are the beginning of our Dexter herd and we have one more addition on the way in a few weeks!  We'll post updates and pics of Bridgette when she arrives.  She is confirmed bred and will have a calf after the first of the year!!

This is Katrina!  She was born in Jan. of this year and is one of our new additions here at Good Steward Cattle Co.  She is a little shy but loves her new surroundings.  Hopefully by this time next year, she will be bred to have a calf of her own!

This is Cellie!  She is our other new addition here at the farm.  She was born in March of this year and is Kat's half sister.  They look almost like twins!  She is very sweet and a little less shy than Katrina.  She is quite happy to eat right out of your hand!

Another pic of Kat!  She is settling in nicely and is a little less shy every day.  Dexter's are known for their gentle nature and make great moms.

We are soooo excited to have a new addition here at the farm.  L'il Bit, David and Gayle's cow, gave birth to a red bull this morning!  He is really cute!  He is up and around and doing all the things he needs to be doing!  More pictures to come!

Another new addition here at GSCC!!  Bridgette had her little boy Saturday afternoon.  We actually got to see the birth and it was amazing!  He was up on his feet and nursing in less than 30 minutes.  He and mom are doing great!

Another picture of our new little man Bam-Bam!  He is so cute and is running and kicking and playing with the other new babies!  No name yet, any suggestions?

Cellie checking out what's left of the hay rations from earlier in the day.  Both of these little ladies are soooo sweet and are great additions to our farm.

A few more pictures of our newest addition!  Gayle and David named this little man Levi.  He is a handsome little bull.  Dexter's are very good mom's and they look out for everyone's babies.  In the last picture you can see all the other ladies facing in different directions to keep a lookout for any potential dangers.
